Mexicana Skirt

Skirt reworked from a handwoven silk scarf from Mexico. The original silk fabric retains its structure, with vertical red and white threads creating a sheer, lightweight effect across the skirt, while the later added silk lining adds structure and stabilises the delicate material.

The hem is finished with dense red fringe and feathers, adding volume and movement as you walk.

The rebozo (scarf) is one of Mexico’s oldest and most sacred textiles. For over 400 years, it has been central to Mexican culture, worn by women across the country, carried as a symbol of elegance and identity, woven on traditional pedal looms with techniques passed down through generations. Frida Kahlo wore them as wearable art. The wearing of a rebozo is said to make the movement of a woman more graceful. The woven body is made on the loom, the fringe knotted by hand, a process that can take weeks.

This one never found its wearer. It waited.

We found it, and re-Gasparied it. The original silk threads, the red and white vertical weave, the handknotted fringe, all still there, still intact. We added a silk lining, shaped it into a skirt, and gave it the life it was always meant to have. On the dance floor, romantic dinner, or just at home hanging as a piece of art. Two artisan traditions, two countries, one piece.
